CSV013 Quality Learning in Year 5/6 Mathematics

Case Study Video 013. Mr Phypers and his students discuss improving learning in his year 5/6 mathematics lessons.

Paul Phypers and his students describe improvements to teaching and learning in the year 5/ 6 mathematics program at Pascoe Vale North Primary School, Melbourne, Victoria.

They describe how the application of Quality Learning principles and practices led to greater student engagement, learning and enjoyment.

Starting with a few simple improvement tools and a willingness to reflect on his teaching practice, Paul worked with the students to identify ways to improve student learning and the sources of dissatisfaction with mathematics. This led to a significant restructuring of Paul's teaching methods. Working together, Paul and the students developed new class-room processes that enabled students to accept greater responsibility for their learning and ensure they received 'just in time' assistance. This resulted in improved academic performance and engagement in the study of mathematics.
