Michael N King

BE (Hons), MBA, Grad Dip Science (Statistics)

Michael spent the first decade of his work life as an electrical engineer in the Telecom Australia (now Telstra) network management unit.

While with Telstra, Michael completed a Master of Business Administration at the Melbourne Business School after which he moved into the Corporate Quality Management Branch of Telstra. It was here that Michael developed a passion for the principles and practices of continuous quality improvement.

During his three years with the Quality branch, Michael was personally responsible for the development of the Telstra 'Guide to Process Re-engineering'. He played a key role in the development and implementation of measurement systems for the core business processes of the corporation, applying the Motorola six sigma philosophy and methods. Michael was also an evaluator for the internal Telstra Quality Management awards during this period.

Keen to apply what he had learned about quality improvement more broadly, Michael left Telstra in early 1995 to join the Australian Quality Council (AQC) as a Project Director. While with the AQC, Michael worked with many organisations, assisting them benefit from the Quality approach. Clients included government departments and agencies, large corporations and small enterprises.

In 1996, Michael was instrumental in establishing the AQC Quality in Schools initiative in Victoria. This initial project was a joint initiative of the state Department of Education and the AQC. In the years that followed, Michael led the team that saw the Quality in Schools initiative grow to include over 150 Victorian schools. The program was adapted under Michael's leadership for the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services involving over 200 schools and preschools, representing about 23% of state public schools and preschools.

In September 2002 Michael relocated to Canberra and established Quality Learning Australia.
